چکیده

This report describes the use of surface plasmon spectroscopy to study the effect of surface wettability on the nonspecific adsorption of proteins and detergents to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates on gold. The adsorption of both proteins and detergents to uncharged SAMs showed a general dependence on the wettability of the surface as determined by the contact angle of water on the SAM under cyclooctane (θco). The effect of the wettability of the SAMs on the adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was dependent on whether micelles were present. Above the critical micelle concentration (cmc), SDS adsorbed only on surfaces that gave contact angles with values of cos θco < 0 (i.e., the transfer of the surface from water to cyclooctane has a favorable free energy). Below the cmc, the requirement for adsorption was much more stringent: SDS adsorbed only on the surfaces that gave values of cos θco < -0.9. Similarly, the effect of the wettability of the SAMs on the adsorption of proteins showed a dependence on the size of the proteins. The smaller proteins tested (ribonuclease A and lysozyme) adsorbed only on the least wettable surfaces tested (cos θco < -0.83). The larger proteins tested (pyruvate kinase, fibrinogen, and γ-globulin) also adsorbed best to the least wettable surfaces, but adsorbed to some extent on almost all the surfaces; the single exception was a SAM presenting hexa(ethylene glycol) groups at the surface, to which no protein adsorbed. Films of adsorbed proteins were desorbed from the SAMs by treatment with detergent.

Recovery of Oil in Limestone with Cationic Surfactant: Investigation of the Adsorption, Wettability, and Spontaneous Imbibition

The performance of petroleum recovery methods is dependent on the characteristics of the reservoir rock, oil quality, and formation water. One fundamental feature for considering petroleum recovery methods is the wettability of the rock reservoir. Also, this feature impacts the displacement of fluids in the rock reservior. In the case of the limestone, which normally features oil wettability, e...

An Experimental Investigation of Wettability Alteration in Carbonate Reservoir Using γ-Al2O3 Nanoparticles

Wettability alteration is one of the most important methods for oil recovery from sandstone and carbonate reservoirs. The effects of salinity, pH, temperature, and chemicals such as surfactants and fatty acids on the alteration of the wettability were described in previous studies. In recent years, attention has been directed to nanoparticles as a wettability alteration agent. The effect of som...

The Extractability of Inner-Membrane Proteins from Salmonella typhimurium Intact Cells, Spheroplasts and Inner-Membrane Fragments by Non-Denaturing Detergents

The effect of Triton X-100, Na cholate and Tween 80 on the solubilization of integral membrane proteins in intact cells, spheroplasts and inner-membrane fragments of Salmonella typhimurium was studied. The detergents were used in various concentrations (1.6 to 64 mM) and cytochromes b and d were used as marker to monitor the solubilization of membrane-bound proteins. Results showed that no inne...

Competitive adsorption of collagen and bovine serum albumin—effect of the surface wettability

The competitive adsorption of collagen and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on surfaces with varied wettability was investigated with imaging ellipsometry, and ellipsometry. Silane modified silicon surfaces were used as substrates. The results showed that surface wettability had an important effect on protein competitive adsorption. With the decrease of surface wettability, the adsorption of collagen...
